'LOST MEANING' - CLOAKROOM

Updated: Apr 9, 2022

2022- "In the case of ‘Lost Meaning’ Martin’s vocals are beautifully suspended by layers of reverberated guitar, perfectly timed drum beats and a smooth string of bass that ties this song together as a complete embodiment of heavy meeting soft, airy meeting earth. CLOAKROOM, DISSOLUTION WAVE 2021 VIA @CLOAKROOMISAFUCKINBAND

In Cloakroom’s newest album 'Dissolution Wave' we are met with first track ‘Lost Meaning.’

I have to say, this song is so good, it’s hard to know where to even start.

Right off the bat we’re hit with a power-heavy, drop of vocals, guitar, drums, and bass. Lead vocalist, Doyle Martin, immediately hooks us in with his classic shoegaze and lofty vocals begging the question “are you with me?”

In short, yes. I was with them from the moment I heard it.

In the case of ‘Lost Meaning’ Martin’s vocals are beautifully suspended by layers of reverberated guitar, perfectly timed drum beats and a smooth string of bass that ties this song together as a complete embodiment of heavy meeting soft, airy meeting earth. The type of song you don’t want to end. The type you keep on repeat. Peeling back the layers and appreciating its musical complexities with each dive.

Something worth note in this track, is the impeccable ability to create what almost seems like a half vocal, half purely instrumental piece. Around minute mark 2:28 ‘Lost Meaning’ takes a bold and thoughtful turn into some of the best musical instrumentals I’ve heard in some time. Have I mentioned the layers? Hard to even decipher which component of this song is most pleasing to take in, as it unfolds around you, eventually enveloping the listener whole.

Ultimately, ‘Lost Meaning’ vocals and lyrics powerfully convey a message of asking and seeking what you need with well-appointed balance of melancholy, apathy and conviction.

“Not a soul was here…

I’ve been dealing with the faulty and the fair

With no feeling.”

Reminiscent to me of ‘Gone but Not Entirely’ from previous 2017 album, ‘Time Well’ the same, perfectly captured emotion is brought here in ‘Lost Meaning’. Something both albums and these tracks have in common are their uncanny ability to melt every fiber of auditory cortex in my brain- in the absolute best way possible. Both tracks posses a cerebral level of distortion, harmony and melody working hand in hand to suspend your senses.

I don’t think I will ever get enough of either one of these two aforementioned pieces of work. Cloakroom has created something absolutely supernatural in this album and ‘Lost Meaning’ solidifies it as such. Remis, Martin and Markos have displayed exemplary and superior talent.

Honorable mention: Dissembler, last track on the ‘Dissolution Wave’
